The Chicago Area Chapter of the Ninety-Nines frequently gets requests from other organizations for speakers. The following report from Madeleine Monaco tells of a recent talk she and Mary Lou Erikson presented. For other interested groups, please fill out and send us the "CONTACT US" form.
The Chicago Area 99s were invted to speak to the Zonta Club on January 3rd, 2012
at the Urban Grille in Geneva IL. Past speakers from our Chapter have
addressed this group, but they try to include an aviation topic each January,
so we were invited once again.
The title of our talk was "Amelia's Other Organization" as AE was a
Zontian as well as a 99. Research shows that these two clubs are the only ones
that AE paid her owns dues to :-)
Madeleine Monaco and Mary Lou Erikson arrived prepared to present a talk on
the 99s history and involvement in air racing, and our Ameila Earhart Memorial
Scholarship Fund. Both women spoke from the heart about their love of
aviation, how they became involved in it and their experiences over the years.
We had prepared hand outs regarding the mission of the 99s, and the
Charter members, as well as current International outreach for scholarship
winners. We used the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation short video as a part of
the reminder to the Zontians for the evenings meeting, so they had some intital
information and a "teaser".
There was a table on the side of the room where we spread out the 50 Year
History Book, the 60 Year History Book, several past issues of the 99 News, and
other pertinent materials. We were seated with the Zonta members and treated to
dinner. Intentional or not, I was seated next to their scholarship chair - so
dinner was interesting as well. One of the officers of the Girl Scouts of
Northern IL was there also, and she was interested in having their group help
our group with this year's Girl Scout Badge Day at DuPage.
The talk was well received. Some questions followed. It was fun to
do.
I would recommend that when asked again, we send different representatives
to speak, to continue to show the variety of interests and endeavors that are a
part of our great organization. But if asked, I would certainly do it
again.
We were given a generous donation to the AEMSF and have forwarded it on to
the Treasurer of that Trust.
